Gary Neville strongly suggests Man Utd transfer U-turn with club on verge

Premier League season preview: Man Utd

Gary Neville has urged Manchester United to make a transfer U-turn on Scott McTominay amid interest from West Ham United. Erik ten Hag is reportedly willing to offload McTominay if United receive a suitable offer, but Neville is convinced he should keep the Scotsman beyond the summer deadline.

In July, the Red Devils rejected an opening West Ham bid worth £30million as David Moyes eyes a double swoop including Harry Maguire.

McTominay is allegedly valued between £40m and £45m and will be allowed to leave Old Trafford if his asking price is met.

Ten Hag wants a second midfield signing after recruiting Mason Mount from Chelsea in a £60m deal to start his summer spending.

Fiorentina’s Sofyan Amrabat is near the top of his shortlist, with a formal pursuit expected once two of McTominay, Fred and Donny van de Beek depart.

Neville believes Maguire and McTominay would be impressive captures by West Ham ahead of the new season, in which they will play Europa League football.

But he has urged Ten Hag to reconsider offloading the latter, comparing him to former Hammers captain and Arsenal’s £105m new boy Declan Rice.

“I saw that West Ham were linked with Scott McTominay and Harry Maguire. I don’t think Harry will go there,” Neville started on The Fan Debate.

“But if they were to go there – and I’m not saying they will replace Declan Rice – but in terms of strength, personality and performance levels, he’s [Maguire] a really good defender and would be a fantastic signing.

“McTominay… he’s not Rice, but he’s not too far away from him in terms of profile, and he’s a similar type of player.

“If they get those two players in, they could have a good season, but they need those types of players in. If I were Erik ten Hag, I wouldn’t sell McTominay personally.”

United could raise as much as £150m in the final few weeks of the summer transfer window if the club sell seven players in the shop window.

On top of Maguire, McTominay, Fred and Van de Beek, Dean Henderson is also widely expected to leave before the deadline amid interest from Nottingham Forest.

Eric Bailly and Brandon Williams also look to be out of Ten Hag’s plans, with the latter in talks over a Saudi Arabia switch.
