Frenkie de Jong asked if he’s ‘leaving Barcelona beaches for cold of Manchester’

A cheeky reporter has asked Frenkie de Jong if he's leaving Barcelona's beaches for the cold of Manchester.

The Dutchman was on media duties after Netherlands' 2-2 draw with Poland in the Nations League on Saturday when he was asked about his future in Catalonia. The reporter asked him: "Are you leaving the Catalan beaches for the cold of Manchester?"

And De Jong laughed as he replied: "I can't. I can't say anything." The 25-year-old has been strongly linked with a move to Manchester United and a potential reunion with his former boss Erik ten Hag – who he worked with at Ajax.

Former Tottenham star Rafael van der Vaart has urged his countryman to make the switch to Old Trafford.

He said: "United still need a little quality… There are players who can do the same and maybe be better than you or have performed more.

"As long as those other players are there, he is out of place at Barcelona. At United, he could play more like with the Dutch national team. Then he’s the only one of his kind."

However, De Jong is keen on staying at Barcelona, and he told ESPN ahead of the clash: "I prefer to stay with Barcelona.

"Barcelona is just my dream club. Also from a young age. I just said it too.

"I've never regretted my choice despite the fact that I had hoped for more in terms of prizes than I've achieved so far. But I have never regretted my choice."
