Freddy Adu, who was once labelled as the 'next Pele', believes that Sir Alex Ferguson would've been the perfect manager to develop him as a youngster and would have helped him to fulfil his potential.

Adu was handed immense pressure after being dubbed as the next big thing when signing for DC United as a 14-year-old, but his career flopped and he has since become a journeyman.

The forward has played for 15 different clubs across nine different countries as his career has failed to live up to any of the high expectations set, but Adu believes this could have been very different.

The American once had a two-week trial at Manchester United in 2006, and Adu thinks that Ferguson would have been the one to take him to the next level.

After spending just two years in DC, Adu left the club and trialled at United as a 16-year-old, although the audition was unsuccessful as he failed to impress Ferguson.

Adu is convinced that it would have been perfect for his development if the legendary United manager took him under his wing, and the American told "Oh he would have been more than perfect for me.

"Being a young player, you don't see it that same way when you're younger, you just see it as 'I'm a good football player and I'm ready to play right now'.

"You're not thinking about your development but the adults or coaches in the room, they are the ones that are very important.

"I had some coaches that were not into giving young players a chance. I did not go to stations where I could just develop and not have that 'pressure' of being 'the next Pele' and not have to contribute right away."

Adu was last seen training with Swedish outfit Osterlen in 2020, but failed to register an appearance for the club.
