Fans have Mbappe theory he made ‘Lionel Messi dig’ to Real Madrid after new deal

Fans on Twitter all have the same Kylian Mbappe theory that he made a 'Lionel Messi dig' to Real Madrid after signing his new contract at Paris Saint-Germain.

Mbappe has penned a three-year extension to stay at the Parc des Princes until at least 2025. It marks a shock U-turn from the Frenchman, who had appeared to be all but certain to join Madrid this summer.

Instead, he will remain Messi's team-mate, with the duo having struck up a successful partnership during the Argentine's first campaign in the French capital. He announced his decision on the pitch ahead of PSG's final day game against Metz, holding up a shirt to the crowd which read 'Mbappe 2025'.

And fans on social media believe that action was a subtle dig at Los Blancos, drawing inspiration from Messi. The former Barcelona star celebrated an injury-time winner against Madrid in a similar fashion back in 2017.

The score in that April's El Clasico had been 2-2, before Jordi Alba cut the ball back to Messi who fired in the winner. Messi raced away to celebrate, tearing off his shirt in the process before being mobbed by his teammates.

As they returned to their positions for the kick-off, Messi then held up his shirt to the Madrid fans in a now-iconic celebration. And many have pointed to that celebration as a potential inspiration behind Mbappe's actions on Saturday.

"No way Mbappe did the Messi celebration just to rub salt into the wounds of Madrid fans," one fan wrote. Another supporter added: "Mbappe and Messi both destroyed Real Madrid and did the same celebration. Inject it."

A third wrote: "Mbappe rejected Madrid and did the iconic Messi celebration." While a fourth added: "Not only did Mbappe Renew with PSG, he also did the iconic Messi celebration which Madrid fans still have nightmares of. Messi's influence on the game is unreal. Messi Neymar Mbappe for another season!!!"

Mbappe went on to celebrate his new contract by scoring a hat-trick against Metz in PSG's final Ligue 1 game of the campaign. Messi assisted one of those goals, potentially a hint to a fruitful partnership in the coming years.
