Fans have shown their displeasure after receiving the news that England and Wales, among other countries, won’t be wearing the #OneLove armband at the World Cup in Qatar. Until the day of the two sides’ opening games on Monday, it was expected that captains Harry Kane and Gareth Bale would wear the armband in protest of the criminalisation of same-sex relationships in the tournament’s host country.

In a row over the armband, several football associations backed down after it was revealed that captains who support the campaign would receive a yellow card. “FIFA has been very clear that it will impose sporting sanctions if our captains wear the armbands on the field of play,” a statement by several nations read.

“As national federations, we can’t put our players in a position where they could face sporting sanctions including bookings, so we have asked the captains not to attempt to wear the armbands in FIFA World Cup games.

“We were prepared to pay fines that would normally apply to breaches of kit regulations and had a strong commitment to wearing the armband. However, we cannot put our players in the situation where they might be booked or even forced to leave the field of play.”

However fans were unhappy at the English FA for backing down to FIFA and urged them to reconsider their decision. “FIFA & the FA are an utter disgrace,” one fan tweeted. “Afraid of wearing an armband in case they get a yellow card or face being booked? Try fearing for your life for being a member of the LGBT community. I won’t watch a single match this year. I hope these overpaid men LOSE every f****** game.”

Another fan called the FA “weak” and claimed the country would be behind the team if they reversed the call. “The FA are weak,” they wrote. “A protest is often met with consequences. This is so the powers that be can silence protest and keep the status quo. I don’t think anyone in the UK would have been upset if we got a punishment because the players wore the armband today.”

A third fan called England’s previous campaigns “empty gestures” and claimed that the FA had turned their back on the LGBTQ+ community.

They wrote: “Dear @England & @FA If you don’t wear the One Love armband in Qatar you don’t get to wear it anywhere else. No empty gestures at Wembley or anything like that. You have turned your back on the LGBTQ+ community and you have to own that #Qatar2022 #OneLove.”

Kane could wear the FIFA-approved armband, which features a different social campaign in each round of the competition and begins with #FootballUnitesTheWorld, though does not mention specific support for the LGBTQ+ community in Qatar.
