Everton takeover twist as real-life Jerry Maguire ‘confident’ of agreement soon

Everton’s takeover could be completed by Monday with reports indicating MSP Sports Capital – fronted by the man who was part of the inspiration for film Jerry Maguire – are ‘confident’ of beating 777 Partners to the purchase of the Toffees. It was announced at the start of the year that Farhad Moshiri had put Everton up for sale with the hope of attracting bids in excess of £500million.

The unpopular Everton owner had sought outside investment prior to putting the club on the market. Talks had been moving slowly until this week when it was reported that American outfit 777 Partners had emerged as the frontrunners to complete a £600m takeover.

Part of the need to push things through quickly is due to an imminent payment needed for the club’s new stadium at Bramley Moore dock. The £505m build is scheduled to be ready for the start of the 2024-25 season, although the club’s takeover process could hold things up.

But it looks as though Everton are getting closer to a full takeover now with the Daily Mail reporting MSP have moved ahead of 777 Partners in the race. It’s claimed that MSP, who were previously linked with a takeover bid at Tottenham, are ‘confident they can complete a deal for Everton by Monday’.

More talks are expected to take place over the course of the weekend to try and reach a final agreement. The US-based investment fund already has ties with a number of football clubs all over the world including FC Augsburg, AD Alorcon and GD Estoril.

They’re fronted by Iranian-American businessman Jahm Najafi, but Jeff Moorad is MSP’s chief executive with the company named after him – Moorad Sports Partners. Moorad is one of the most famous sports agents in American sporting history having sold up back in 1999.
