Incoming Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has wasted no time in commencing preparations for his summer arrival. Ten Hag has held a recruitment meeting with United in Amsterdam the day after guiding Ajax to their third Dutch Eredivisie title of his tenure.

ESPN report the Dutchman is trying to get a head start with his new job at Old Trafford after lifting his latest piece of silverware with Ajax. On Thursday, has met United representatives to discuss the club’s summer recruitment, including the potential ins and outs in his first transfer window as boss.

Ten Hag is expected to oversee the start of a significant rebuild at United ahead of his first season in charge, with several first-team players expected to depart. Lee Grant, Nemanja Matic, Paul Pogba, Juan Mata, Jesse Lingard and Edinson Cavani will all leave on free transfers.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Phil Jones, Eric Bailly, Axel Tuanzebe and Anthony Martial are other names who face increasingly uncertain futures at the club. And with a mass exodus, new signings will follow, and that will have been one of the topics of Ten Hag’s meeting in the Dutch capital.

One of the names on the agenda will undoubtedly be Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong, who was the topic of a transfer pipe bomb from the Catalan press shortly after Ajax’s win on Wednesday night. According to Barcelona journalist Gerard Romero, De Jong will be Ten Hag’s first signing as United manager this summer, and a deal is ’95 per cent certain’.

The 24-year-old thrived under Ten Hag at Ajax before switching to Camp Nou in a £65million deal in 2019. And Barcelona’s financial woes have made them open to his sale, opening the door for the Red Devils to potentially secure his services for as low as €60m (£51m).

On top of two midfielders – a defensive option and Paul Pogba replacement – Ten Hag is also understood to be prioritising a new striker and centre-back to strengthen the core of his new squad. There have also been expected links to some of his current crop at Ajax, most notably Jurrien Timber and Antony.

United’s early movements, both on the managerial and recruitment front, indicate the club’s sizeable summer plans. And now his work is done at Ajax, barring a dead-rubber final game of the season at Vitesse, he appears to be all-in on preparations.
