Erik ten Hag admits he has 'reservations' over Amad Diallo future

Erik ten Hag admits he has ‘reservations’ over Amad Diallo’s role in Manchester United squad next season despite 20-year-old’s superb loan spell at Sunderland, as manager insists ‘young players need experiences’

  • Erik ten Hag has questioned whether Amad Diallo has a future at Old Trafford
  • Ten Hag admitted he doesn’t want to stop the youngster’s development
  • Amad has been on loan at Sunderland this season but is set to return to United

Erik ten Hag remains undecided about Amad Diallo’s Manchester United future despite some supporters demanding he be given a chance to impress the Dutchman.

Amad was ruled surplus to requirements at the start of the season upon Ten Hag’s arrival and was shipped out on a season-long loan move to Championship side Sunderland.

The Ivorian has thrived in the north-east and now wants to try and land a more significant role at United once the season comes to its end, but Ten Hag has reservations over interrupting the winger’s development.

‘We consider everything but I have a little bit of reservation about [recalling Amad] because I don’t want to stop the process,’ said Ten Hag.

‘He has made really good progress there so I’m happy with that.

‘But young players need experiences and when we decide for him to come back, he has to be a player who can compete for the starting XI or minimum to come on for a lot of games and make an impact.’

Amad was brought to Man United by former manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in 2021 for £37million despite being a relatively unknown talent after coming up through Atalanta’s youth system.

The 20-year-old signed a five year deal until 2025 with the option of a further year but has so far made just nine first-team appearances for the Red Devils, scoring his only goal in a last-16 Europa League tie against AC Milan.

He has enjoyed better fortunes at Sunderland this season in the club’s bid to make the Championship play-offs, scoring 12 goals and registering three assists across all competitions for the Black Cats.

Amad’s scintillating form has also seen him nominated for the Championship’s young player of the season award and Sunderland boss Tony Mowbray has warned United not to let the young talent be lured away by another big club.

The 20-year-old has made just nine senior appearances for United so far in his career

‘I have a good feeling for Amad that if he’s not back at United he will go for big, big money to a top Spanish team. He loves football and wants to play so what do you do if you are at Manchester United? ‘ said Mowbray.

‘Are you happy just to be a Manchester United player and play six sub appearances and two starts over a season of 60 games for them? Or do you want to go out and play?

‘So are they going to sell him? If they do they will want to recoup their money which was reputedly 40 euros or whatever it was.

‘I would suggest they would try him at another level and he’d go (on loan) to the Premier League, or go back to Italy or Seria A or Spain.’
