Chelsea are reportedly trying to bring Emerson Palmieri back to Stamford Bridge for the rest of the season to provide some much-needed injury cover at the back. The Italian defender is spending the campaign on loan at Lyon but is reportedly being lined up for a premature return to west London as a direct result of Ben Chilwell’s long-term absence.

The England defender is expected to miss the vast majority of the campaign after suffering a knee ligament injury during Chelsea’s win over Juventus back in November.

Marcos Alonso has been holding down the left wing-back spot in recent weeks, but the Blues are said to be keen on adding further quality to their ranks in the position this month.

They were heavily linked with a loan move for Everton outcast Lucas Digne at the start of the transfer window but look set to miss out on the former Barcelona man’s signature.

He is reportedly in advanced talks over a potential move to Aston Villa over the coming days, leaving Chelsea in need of an alternative solution.

The European champions are now planning to engineer a recall for Emerson, who has featured heavily for Lyon since joining the French heavyweights on a season-long loan deal over the summer.

The Italian defender has registered 19 appearances in all competitions for his temporary employers, chipping in with a goal and an assist in the process.

He is Thomas Tuchel’s preferred option to replace Chilwell on the left flank, but it remains to be seen whether Lyon will be prepared to let him return to his parent club over the coming weeks.

Chelsea have already seen two proposals rejected by the Ligue 1 outfit and are now drawing up a fresh plan to table £3.3million in compensation to force through the move, according to The Guardian.

Meanwhile, it seems as though Emerson would have no qualms with being shipped back to England in the event of Lyon accepting Chelsea’s next offer.

He is ready and willing to help out as he believes that he will get the chance to work his way back into regular contention by impressing Tuchel during the second half of the campaign, according to Goal.

The report claims that Chelsea are unable to simply recall Emerson without paying a fee due to the presence of an option to buy inserted into his contract with Lyon.

Lyon are eager to keep hold of the 27-year-old, who they feel has been one of their best players during his short stint in France, but could be tempted by a compensatory package if Chelsea are successful in meeting their demands.

Emerson is known to be a fan of Tuchel’s management style, admitting towards the end of last season that his tactical nous and meticulous levels of analysis were clear for all to see from the very start of his spell in charge.

“Thomas arrived here and on the first day we noticed the organisation that his team has,” the defender told SporTV in March of last year.

“He shows a lot of videos, details and information that help us a lot on the pitch.

“The team is well organised, and he’s doing a sensational job. We need to take advantage of this, get the best out of him.

“We entered the final stage of the season, we have the Premier League, the FA Cup, the Champions League, and we just need to work out some details and keep doing what we are doing.”
