Dire from Eric Dier as Tottenham man makes huge howler to gift Mo Salah goal

It was a case of like name, like nature for Eric Dier as the Spurs defender gifted Liverpool their second goal at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Jurgen Klopp's side took the lead after just 11 minutes when Salah finished off a wonderful team move to make it 1-0. And he doubled Liverpool's lead just before half-time after capitalising on a huge error from Dier.

Reds goalkeeper Alisson launched a long ball upfield that looked like bread and butter for the England defender. But he got it horribly wrong as he headed the ball onto his shoulder, playing in a lurking Mohamed Salah.

The Egyptian needed no second invitation to latch onto the loose ball, taking a couple of touches before lifting it over a helpless Hugo Lloris in the Tottenham goal to make it 2-0.

Salah wheeled away in celebration as Dier contemplated what he had done. And Spurs supporters on social media weren't particularly pleased with the former Sporting Lisbon man either.

One angry fan wrote: "That’s the worst Dier mistake I’ve seen, he’s out done himself." Someone else commented: "Dier that’s the worst defending I have ever seen in my life."

A third person added: "Here lads dunno if anyone noticed but what Dier did before that Salah goal was pretty dire and that word sounds just like his surname."

Another user said: "Since the England recall , Dier has been shocking , not just today." While someone else chimed in with: "Since the England recall , Dier has been shocking , not just today."

Sky Sports pundit Graeme Souness didn't mince his words when discussing the error. He said: "What is Dier doing here? He heads it on to his shoulder, Salah has read it and what you have to say about this goal is that it looks simple, but his touch, his touch with his knee and then the finish, we can all do that at our own pace, he’s doing this when he is sprinting.

"He just makes it so easy."
