Crouch found Xabi Alonso’s partner "beautiful" and thought he had a chance

Peter Crouch has revealed how he once fell head over heels for a "beautiful" woman in Liverpool who he thought was flirting with him — only to find out she was the partner of Xabi Alonso.

The 6’7 target man played for the Reds early in his career after signing under Rafa Benitez in 2005 and scored 42 goals in 134 appearances in his three seasons at Anfield.

At the time, Crouch was a single man and he thought he had found the back of the net when a mystery woman caught his eye shortly moving to Merseyside.

Crouch had just completed his £7million transfer to the club and was holed up in the Hope Street Hotel while he made arrangements to move into a house.

And it was there when he saw Nagore Aranburu apparently flirting with him, seemingly unaware that she was in a relationship with another man at the time.

But it was not just any man she was involved with — it was his suave new team-mate Alonso, who had joined the previous year from Real Sociedad.

The situation was only made worse when Crouch decided to tell his team-mates about his encounter with the stunning Aranburu, with captain Jamie Carragher the first to mock the striker for misreading the situation.

Writing in his column in the Daily Mail, Crouch explained: “On signing for Liverpool I stayed at the Hope Street Hotel.

“On reception was a girl so good-looking I couldn’t quite believe she was smiling at me all the time.

“I told the lads in training, ‘honestly, she’s beautiful, I think I’ve got a shout here.’

“Jamie Carragher called a few other senior players over, ‘tell them again, Crouchie.’

"So I did, ‘amazing. Dark-haired. Spanish-looking. I’m in there.’ It turned out she was Xabi Alonso’s partner.”

Unfortunately for Crouch, the pair were in it for the long haul as Alonso and Aranburu tied the knot in 2009 and are still together now.

The Spaniard eventually found out what had happened and explained why Crouch had bumped into her at the hotel.

But while Alonso was prepared to draw a line under the embarrassing incident, the former England international was not so lucky with the mischievous Carragher, who refused to let him forget.

“She was doing a bit of work to practise her language skills,” he added.

“He [Alonso] was nice about it. So was she. Carra [Carragher] less so.”

Crouch eventually left Liverpool in 2008, going on to play for Portsmouth and Tottenham before settling at Stoke City, where he scored 62 goals in 261 appearances.

The former striker did get his own happy ending after wedding glamour model Abi Clancy in 2011. The couple now have four children — two boys and two girls.

After deciding to hang up his boots at the age of 38, Crouch is a director at Dulwich Hamlet FC, hosts his own popular podcast and has a BBC programme on called Peter Crouch: Save Our Summer.
