The Blues are looking to bolster their defensive back-line after losing Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen, with Marcos Alonso’s future at the club also under doubt.

Lukaku meanwhile has struggled since completing his £98million return to Stamford Bridge last summer.

There have been reports that Lukaku could return to the San Siro, and Chelsea’s pursuit of Dumfries could be boosted if the Belgian striker goes the other way.

Since signing for the Italian giants last summer, Dumfries has made 33 league appearances in Serie A.

Manchester United are also believed to be keen on signing Dumfries with Aaron Wan-Bissaka having struggled last season before eventually losing his starting place in the team.

Erik ten Hag has been impressed by Dumfries’ performances at Inter Milan over the past year

United manager Erik ten Hag has been impressed by Dumfries’ performances since joining Inter Milan from PSV Eindhoven last year.

Inter have a history of letting top quality right-backs go in recent years, having allowed Achraf Hakimi to leave for PSG for £59.85m last summer and failing to make Joao Cancelo’s successful loan spell from Valencia permanent in 2018.

Dumfries, who scored five goals and assisted seven last season, is contracted at Inter Milan until 2025.
