Chelsea take savage dig at Brighton while announcing Marc Cucurella transfer

Chelsea have brutally hit back at Brighton & Hove Albion while confirming the transfer of Marc Cucurella.

The Blues announced the signing of the defender in a £55million plus £7m add-ons deal on Friday. The 24-year-old full-back’s new contract will see him play at Stamford Bridge until 2028.

And Chelsea’s social media team took the opportunity to take aim at Brighton by tweeting: “CLUB STATEMENT: MARC CUCURELLA. Following reports from numerous media outlets this week, we can confirm an agreement has been reached with Brighton and Hove Albion for the signing of Marc Cucurella.”

It followed the same style as Brighton’s tweet on Wednesday which shut down reports claiming Cucurella had joined Chelsea.

Brighton took to Twitter on Wednesday to quell the rumours, writing: "Contrary to inaccurate reports from numerous media outlets this evening, no agreement has been reached with any club to sell Marc Cucurella.”

Fans have since picked up on the cheeky jibe by Chelsea, with one Twitter user commenting: “Hahahha mudded Brighton,” while another wrote: “OWN THE BRIGHTON ADMIN.”

Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano also got in on the action, replying to Chelsea’s tweet with: “…here we go,” along with a smug-face emoji.

Romano initially broke news of the transfer on Wednesday evening but was met with a barrage of criticism after Brighton’s statement appeared to play down his report that an agreement was in place for Cucurella.

The news will also come as a blow for any Manchester City fans hoping that his move to Chelsea had hit a snag. Pep Guardiola was keen on signing the defender but was reportedly put off by his hefty price-tag.
