Chelsea may already know who their next manager will be after Graham Potter. Blues owner Todd Boehly has reportedly held direct talks with Sporting Lisbon boss Ruben Amorim and he could replace Potter in the future.

Chelsea sacked Thomas Tuchel on Wednesday, 100 days into the new owners’ reign. Boehly had already decided to part ways with the German before Tuesday’s shock Champions League defeat at Dinamo Zagreb.

Potter immediately became the favourite to take over at Stamford Bridge. Brighton gave Chelsea permission to speak to the 47-year-old after the west London club signalled their intent to pay his £16million release clause and he signed a long-term contract with the Blues on Thursday.

But as Potter heads through the door at Stamford Bridge, his future replacement may already be known. Sky Sports claims Boehly spoke directly to Sporting boss Amorim with a view to a future appointment.

Boehly expressed his admiration for the 37-year-old and interest in him further down the line. Chelsea chiefs have been impressed by the start Amorim has made to his managerial career.

He first managed Casa Pia in the third tier of Portuguese football before taking over at SC Braga in 2019. Braga beat Porto in the league cup final in January 2020 and his performances caught the eye of Sporting.

Amorim has won two more league cups in his time at Sporting but also ended the club’s 19-year wait for a top-flight title in the 2020/21 season. He has caught the eye of Boehly and could make a move to the Premier League in the near future.

The shelf life of most Chelsea managers is relatively short. That doesn’t appear to have changed following the sale of the club earlier this year.

Potter knows he will have to be successful almost immediately in order to keep his job for the short to medium term. He has already shown at Brighton how he can turn good Premier League footballers into top players.

He has big shoes to fill in Tuchel, who many Chelsea fans did not want to see leave. The pressure will be on Potter straight away against Fulham on Saturday.

He lost at Craven Cottage with Brighton just 10 days ago, so knows all about Marco Silva’s side. But as he comes up against one Portuguese manager in his first match in charge of Chelsea, Potter will be aware Amorim is potentially already waiting in the wings to take his job in the future.
