Chelsea have seven sale options to fund both Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia

Pochettino offers update on Chelsea's pursuit of Caicedo

Chelsea could offload seven stars as part of an emergency sale to fund the purchases of Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia. The Blues have been tipped to sign both midfielders this summer as Mauricio Pochettino looks to put together a team that can compete with the best sides in Premier League.

Chelsea have shelled out prodigious sums of cash to bring in a whole host of players since Todd Boehly completed a takeover at the end of May 2022. But the Blues endured a dismal campaign last time around as they finished 12th in the top-flight.

Pochettino has been appointed as manager in an attempt to put things right on the pitch, with plenty more new players following the Argentine to Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea could now stump up £110million in return for Brighton ace Caicedo and another £50m in exchange for Southampton star Lavia. And, despite already shipping out 12 players during the current transfer window, the Blues will need to raise some more money to fund their two latest targets.

Chelsea are desperate to see the back of Romelu Lukaku, who has flopped since returning to west London two years ago from Inter Milan. The Belgium striker, who has attracted interest from Inter and Juventus, cost the Blues £97.5m but may only net them £35m if they can offload him.

Hakim Ziyech is another player who appears to have no future in the capital. The Morocco winger looked set to join Cristiano Ronaldo at Saudi Arabian club Al-Nassr earlier this summer after the two clubs agreed an £8m transfer fee. But the move ultimately collapsed, with Boehly left to search for other teams who are willing to take the player off his hands.

Chelsea have already turned down a £40m bid from West Ham for midfielder Conor Gallagher. But if the Hammers stick another £10m on their offer, Boehly’s head may well be turned. Meanwhile, Trevor Chalobah appears to be surplus to requirements in London, with the Blues reportedly demanding £45m for the centre-back. And striker Armando Broja could net his club £30m with some clever transfer negotiations.

Chelsea could also decide to take a £35m hit on defensive flop Marc Cucurella after signing him from Brighton for £60m last summer. The left-back has plenty of potential suitors in Spain and the Blues could decide that a transfer fee in the region of £25m would be enough for them to sanction a move. And if Boehly still needs more cash, he could allow Ian Maatsen to move on, with the left-back already being linked with a £20m transfer to Burnley.

Boehly may feel those seven departures wouldn’t hamper Pochettino that much this season. And if the American could move them all on before the transfer window slams shut at the start of September, he could bag himself a whopping £213m. That income would be more than enough to cover the purchases of Caicedo and Lavia, with money left over to fund other signings in January.
