Chelsea defender Antonio Rudiger is currently facing an uncertain future at Stamford Bridge. The Germany international, who has been linked with a move to Liverpool as of late, will be out of contract next summer and is yet to sign a new deal with the Blues despite months of negotiations.

Rudiger has emerged as one of Chelsea’s most important assets since Thomas Tuchel arrived to replace Frank Lampard at the helm back in January.

He was a key member of the side that sealed Champions League glory last season as part of a back three that conceded just twice in the knockout stages of the tournament.

The former Roma man has gone on to reprise his influential role in the Blues defence this time around, making 12 appearances in all competitions.

Chelsea are believed to be keen on tying Rudiger down to a new long-term contract but have made little to no progress in recent talks over an extension.

He will be able to negotiate a free transfer with a foreign club from January as things stand, with a future move away from Stamford Bridge looking increasingly likely.

The likes of Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain have recently been credited with an interest in Rudiger, while Liverpool are also said to be keeping tabs on the situation.

He is stalling over a new deal at Chelsea as he wants a bumper salary in order to reflect his value to the club, with an agreement still some way from being finalised, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.

“I’m told they [Chelsea] are still talking with Rudiger’s agents, so it’s not over yet because Rudiger would love to stay,” Romano told Five.

“He wants an important contract, he thinks he deserves an important contract.

“He’s not so young so he wants an important contract also because it’s the final part of his career.

“At the moment they have no financial or economical agreement. I was told a few days ago it was far from being reached, so it’s a dangerous situation for Chelsea.”

Romano went on to declare that Liverpool are yet to reach out to Rudiger over the possibility of an Anfield switch, but suggested that such a move could emerge as a genuine possibility in the near future.

“About Liverpool, I am told that at the moment they’ve made yet no approach with his agents,” he continued.

“Let’s see what happens in the coming months, but for Liverpool there is still no approach.”

It remains to be seen whether Rudiger will eventually commit his long-term future to Chelsea as he seeks what is likely to be the final big-money contract of his playing career.

He joined the Blues from Roma in the summer of 2017 and has since registered a total of 161 appearances for the west London club in all competitions.

Rudiger is also a regular for Germany at international level, having chipped in with two goals for Die Mannschaft since making his debut back in 2014.
