Manchester United’s Edinson Cavani praises team-mate Jadon Sancho for ‘keeping a COOL head’ and maintaining ‘high standards’ after scoring twice in two games following a difficult start to life at Old Trafford

  • The £73m man followed it up with another strike against Chelsea on Sunday
  • Edinson Cavani has described how pleased the dressing-room is for Sancho

Edinson Cavani has praised Manchester United team-mate Jadon Sancho for ‘keeping a cool head’ despite an underwhelming start to life at his new club.

The 21-year-old completed his highly-anticipated move to Old Trafford for £73m from Borussia Dortmund in the summer but struggled in his first few months under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, failing to register a goal or an assist.

But since Michael Carrick has taken caretaker charge, Sancho has score two in two – against Villarreal and Chelsea – and Uruguayan veteran Cavani was keen to point out Sancho’s exemplary attitude amid a ‘tough period.’

The 21-year-old has scored twice in two games following a difficult start at Manchester United

‘I reckon that one of the things that scoring goals can give you, a lot of the time, is the sense of assurance and peace of mind to keep on working and training hard,’ he told the club’s official website.

‘I think, a lot of the time in football, you have to have an extra inner strength about you, which is to be able to keep going when on many occasions we don’t get on the scoresheet.

‘And being able to always keep your spirits up and maintain that same dedication and hard work, while keeping your fitness levels high. We are all really happy for him scoring his first goal. I think it’s been quite a tough period for him, but football is like that.

Cavani himself is still out of action due to a back injury but again praised England international Sancho for not focusing on the noise surrounding him.

‘When you get to a certain level of the game, I think that people are always full of expectation and there’s always a lot of chat and questions being asked about players.

Sancho kept a cool head to finish past Edouard Mendy during the 1-1 draw against Chelsea

‘I think he just needs to keep demonstrating everything he has shown us up to now and keep working calmly and with a clear head. Because often, the only thing that can make you enjoy success and able to keep your standards high and the rest of it, is the peace of mind that hard work gives you.

‘And the perseverance and discipline to be up there. That’s the only way to keep a cool head when perhaps things aren’t quite going for you.’

Sancho will be looking to be involved in United’s next game, at home to Arsenal in the Premier League on Thursday night.
