Brighton ‘get revenge’ for Man Utd last gasp pen three years after VAR fiasco

Brighton have seemingly gotten their revenge over Manchester United – almost three years after one of the Premier League's most controversial moments.

The Seagulls snatched a 99th-minute winner on Thursday evening when a VAR review deemed Luke Shaw handled the ball in the box. Speaking after the game, Shaw admitted there was no excuse for having his hand in that position.

However, the decision meant that Alexis Mac Allister was handed the golden opportunity to dispatch his penalty, and with it, earn the three points. The Argentine made no mistakes and some fans pointed to Brighton earning some sort of revenge for an infamous 2020 clash.

Back in September 2020, early into the covid season, Brighton welcomed the Red Devils to the Amex Stadium.

The Seagulls thought they'd claimed a historic point against United when the full-time whistle sounded. However, as the teams headed down the tunnel, VAR intervened – awarding the Red Devils a penalty.

Bruno Fernandes was the man to step up and convert the spot kick – securing the three points for United.
