Barcelona have pulled off what seems to be a smart piece of business – with Samuel Umtiti's new deal keeping him at Camp Nou until 2026.
The Frenchman's new contract has seen him take a substantial pay cut, and that has allowed Barca to complete the registration of new signing Ferran Torres.
However, the best part of the deal for Barca is that they can cancel Umtiti's contract in 2023.
The Frenchman's deal was set to originally expire in 2023 before Umtiti put pen to paper on a new deal.
Barca have now saved some funds, and Umtiti can still walk away from the club in 2023.
Umtiti had previously been linked with Newcastle United by Spanish outlet Sport.
Sport suggested that the Toon Army could afford to bring in the Frenchman and his sizeable wages that other interested clubs couldn't offer Umtiti.
However, the stumbling block was Umtiti wanted to go to a club with European football, and the option to return to Catalonia in the summer.
Newcastle have already dipped into the Spanish market this window with the acquisition of Kieran Tripper from Monaco.
