Atletico Madrid star Felipe was sent off in bizarre circumstances against Liverpool at Anfield on Wednesday evening with Danny Makkelie showing three cards in two minutes.

The defender was set to be booked for the challenge on Sadio Mane following goals from Diogo Jota and the Senegal international, but his failure to obey the instructions of the referee led to his dismissal.

The Brazil international ignored requests from Makkelie for him to return to the scene of the tackle after he had jogged away, and was punished in unforgiving style.

While some may have expected a second yellow, he showed a straight red before being able to brandish the caution, and his actions have been led to a very mixed reaction.

One wrote on Twitter: "What the hell is going on at Anfield? Danny Makkelie, the ref, is going bonkers."

With a second adding: "Danny Makkelie just had to make the game about himself. How is that a Red Card for Felipe?"

A third continued: "Danny Makkelie has absolutely lost it."

With a fourth concluding: "Lol the ref seems to have lost his head. All the aggro from simeone klopp seems to have spilled over to the ref."

With another point of view saying: "Brilliant from referee Danny Makkelie! Players showing complete lack of respect, have a Red!"

Another agreed by writing: "Good on Danny Makkelie not taking any of Atletico’s s***."

And a third saying: "Take a bow and massive credit Danny Makkelie. No standing any b******t and for remaining strong."

BBC Sport pundit Dion Dublin said of the incident: "Felipe has got to be a metre and a half away from Sadio Mane and he's just kicked his back legs and swept him up.

"You don't always see those given – I was expecting a yellow."

With a mixture of the foul and dissent leading to his departure from the match, the focus was taken away from the lightning start of the home side.

Trent Alexander-Arnold set up Jota for a close-range header for the opener, with Mane sliding home after another spectacular pass from the full-back.
