Arsenal are set to make an enhanced push to sign in-demand Fiorentina striker Dusan Vlahovic in the January transfer window according to reports, with transfer chief Edu set to lead the charge for his services.
Mikel Arteta’s men have had striking woes recently, with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang being stripped of his captaincy and being dropped from the first team for repeated disciplinary issues.
Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah have done well coming in to replace the Gabon international, with the Frenchman leading the charge in the Premier League and Nketiah being the focal point in the EFL Cup.
However with both contracts running out in the summer, there is a burning need to bring in a replacement for the long-term as the Gunners’ three most senior strikers could be elsewhere by the start of the new season.
With that in mind, Arteta has set his sights on the Serbian after news became rife that Fiorentina would accept a bid of £65million.
And according to football.london, Arsenal director of football Edu is reportedly ‘doing everything possible’ to thrash out a deal by the end of the month.
The report states that the 21-year-old wonderkid is Arteta’s top target having performed exceptionally well in Serie A over the last 18 months.
The Belgrade-born star has notched 16 goals in just 20 league games this season, including a run of eight goals in six across November and December.
And with 21 in 37 last season, it appears he is only going to get better.
Reports linked him with Tottenham earlier in the season, with Lilywhites’ captain Harry Kane being heavily touted for a move to Manchester City.
Football.london have learned that Tottenham managing director Fabio Paratici has a close bond with Vlahovic’s representatives, making a move to the white half of north London a real possibility in the summer.
But it appears Arsenal have edged ahead of their rivals in the race for his signature after making their efforts to sign the Serie A star well-known.
The report further goes on to state that despite their interest, Vlahovic would prefer to stay in Italy, with a move to Juventus or AC Milan preferred over a switch to the Emirates.
However, a fee of £60million has been touted for his services, which could put the Italian giants off a move.
The £60m price tag is said to be no issue for Arsenal, although an agreement with his representatives is still a sticking point.
And Arteta hinted at using the January transfer window to his benefit earlier in the window.
“I think with the amount of things and the way that we want to evolve the squad, we have to maximise every window in many different ways and we are alert,” the Spaniard said.
“Edu and his team are working very hard because we know exactly what we need to do.
“And whether we can accomplish that in January or in the summer, is a different question as it is related to other stuff.”
