Arsenal’s slick black and gold away kit was at least one positive for Mikel Arteta’s side and their fans – even if it was missing the black socks.

The north Londoners’ 100% Premier League record was ended by a ruthless and clinical Manchester United side. United’s latest superstar Antony got the ball rolling with his first goal for Erik ten Hag’s side, before Marcus Rashford responded to Bukayo Saka’s equalising goal with a quick-fire brace.

However, one of the biggest talking points of the contest were rooted in the grey Adidas socks the Arsenal players were curiously wearing. There was no club branding, nor was there any kind of semblance that would immediately shout ‘Arsenal Football Club’.

And Premier League fans very quickly cottoned onto the curious choice of socks. “Those Arsenal socks look like white socks that've been in the washing machine with the dark laundry too often,” one fan posted.

Another supporter had the same instinct, tweeting: “Arsenal socks not even original, Who put their black pants in with Arsenal’s socks in the wash?”

“The Arsenal away kit is one of the nicest they've ever had, but those grey socks are so ugly,” one evidently disappointed fan who was eager to see the new kit.

“I don’t have the data but, in my mind, Arsenal have a very poor record away, when they need to change the socks on their away kit. Had bad vibes as soon as I saw those socks today,” one supporter posted, insinuating a possible football sock curse had struck the Gunners.

Various reports understand Arsenal’s socks were not intended to be worn against United. The Gunners kit man brought the club’s usual black socks that are worn with their black and gold jersey.

Unfortunately, for the poor kit man, the club was not allowed to wear the black socks as they clashed with United’s socks. If only All or Nothing cameras were still there to document the sock saga.
