Arsenal eye up late £30m transfer boost as Nuno Tavares ‘talks’ accelerate

Arsenal: Arteta admits Arsenal could dip back in market after Jurrien Timber injury

Arsenal sporting director Edu could oversee a £30million sale before the end of the summer. Nottingham Forest are reportedly ramping up their attempts to prise Nuno Tavares away from the Emirates Stadium, and the Tricky Trees are said to have the edge over two rival suitors.

Tavares spent last season on loan at Marseille, scoring six goals in Ligue 1 and earning plaudits for his attacking prowess. The left-back has only made 28 first-team appearances for Arsenal, but several wayward showings left fans to doubt his defensive capabilities.

Mikel Arteta and co may still bank a huge profit on the 23-year-old during the current window. According to The Mirror, Forest are accelerating transfer talks, with Steve Cooper’s side willing to slap £30m on the table.

Thrashing out such a deal would make Tavares Arsenal’s biggest sale of the entire summer, eclipsing the £21m received after Granit Xhaka’s move to Bayer Leverkusen.

It would also provide a welcome boost to Arteta’s future transfer kitty, having splashed out on a selection of high-class players earlier this summer. The Gunners and Forest are still working out whether a loan or a permanent deal would be the best course of action for the Portuguese star, who was signed for just £6.8m back in 2021.

Werder Bremen and Wolfsburg are both interested in bringing Tavares to the Bundesliga, although the player would reportedly prefer to remain in the Premier League.

A final decision on what comes next for Tavares is expected ‘imminently’, with less than two weeks left in the summer window. Matt Turner, Auston Trusty and Pablo Mari have all left north London permanently over the past few months.

Several other players are on the chopping block with Kieran Tierney, Nicolas Pepe and Folarin Balogun among those heavily linked with moves elsewhere. Arsenal are back in Premier League action on Monday, having started the campaign with a 2-1 win over Forest.

Arteta’s side attempted to stay fresh, ahead of their upcoming clash with Crystal Palace, by partaking in a behind-closed-doors friendly against Premier League new boys Luton Town on Thursday.

David Raya and Oleksandr Zinchenko were both in action for the Londoners as they ran out comfortable 3-0 winners over three 30-minute periods.
