Arsenal have discussed the potential loan signing of Juventus midfielder Arthur Melo as they look to bolster their options in the middle of the park, reports claim. The Brazilian, who arrived in Europe with Barcelona after catching the eye with Gremio, has fallen off the radar during his time in Turin.

Barca signed Arthur from the South American club in 2018 before sending him to Juve in 2020 as Miralem Pjanic headed the other way.

The Italian giants did pay a whopping £66million for his services and that has failed to pay dividends on the basis of his performances.

With Juve now looking to clear the decks, Arthur has been earmarked as one of the players that could depart should a suitable offer arrive.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Arsenal have discussed the prospect of signing Arthur on loan.

The Gunners are yet to reach out to Juventus though with the deal only under discussion in the boardroom.

Arsenal want to sign a central midfield player after losing Mohamed Elneny and Thomas Partey to the Africa Cup of Nations.

Ainsley Maitland-Niles has also joined Roma on loan, meaning Arteta is now considerably light in midfield.

Romano claims there are three names currently on Arsenal’s radar as they plan their next move.

Lyon’s Bruno Guimaraes is appreciated by Edu but a deal looks too complicated this month.

That’s because the French club are set to demand up to £40m to agree to a sale.

In recent weeks, the Gunners have been tipped to move for Borussia Monchengladbach’s Denis Zakaria.

Empoli’s 20-year-old ace Samuele Ricci is also said to be attracting admirers in north London.

Ricci has been dubbed ‘little Jorginho’ in Italy due to his stylistic similarities to the Chelsea man.

Speaking ahead of Arsenal’s FA Cup third-round tie at Nottingham Forest, Arteta made it clear that the Gunners will spend this month should the right opportunity arise.

“If it’s the right player, we can afford and we can do want we want to do, we will discuss it and come to the best possible decision. We are open,” he said.

“I think with the amount of things and the way we want to evolve the squad, we have to maximise every window in many different ways.

“We are alert. (Technical director) Edu and his team are working very hard because we know exactly what we need to do.

“Whether we can accomplish that in January or the summer is a different question and related to lots of other stuff but we are there.”
