Arsenal can make four signings to bridge Man City gulf in class

Guardiola gives verdict on Man City’s win over Arsenal

Arsenal were handed a harsh reality check by Manchester City on Wednesday night which showed that they need to continue spending if they are to finally lift the Premier League trophy. Mikel Arteta is looking to bolster his ranks at the end of the season, and it has quickly become clear where investment is required.

A brace from Kevin De Bruyne helped City to a 4-1 victory over their title rivals at the Etihad Stadium, with Erling Haaland and John Stones also getting on the score sheet to gain an advantage in their trophy charge.

Arsenal have spent the majority of this season at the top of the table and their progress was somewhat ahead of schedule, which softens the blow of a potential second-placed finish. However, with other clubs also set to improve further, the North London outfit cannot afford to be content with their current options and not being in new recruits. Express Sport looks at four signings that Arteta could benefit from…

Jonathan David (Lille)

Reports have claimed that Arteta is looking to bring in at least one more forward this summer, and he could provide himself with another versatile option by acquiring the services of Jonathan David from Lille – a player that Arsenal are long-term admirers of. The 23-year-old fits the bill of being a younger prospect that will improve in time, though his 21 goals in 31 appearances prove that he is more than ready to play regularly – may that be through the middle or off of the right.

Moises Caicedo (Brighton)

Arsenal saw their offers for Moises Caicedo fall on deaf ears in January, though Brighton are more willing to negotiate a deal this summer amid plenty of interest. The Ecuador international has been one of the best midfielders in the Premier League this season and the Gunners may decide that he is worth the significant price tag simply so that he does not bolster the ranks of one of their rivals.

Declan Rice (West Ham)

West Ham are expected to part ways with Declan Rice at the end of the season, regardless of whether they remain in the Premier League. The England international has suitors in the Big Six, though reports have previously speculated that Arsenal are in pole position to secure his signature. Given that Arteta lacks depth in central defence, Rice’s experience in that role could be incredibly attractive despite thriving in midfield previously.

Ivan Fresneda (Real Valladolid)

Bringing in another right-back would be a quick-fix solution for Arsenal’s defensive concerns, allowing both Ben White and Takehiro Tomiyasu to be deployed in central defence if required. Ivan Fresneda was pursued previously and the talented teenager (18) is expected to attract attention from numerous clubs this summer, though the prospect of challenging for silverware in England could put Arsenal in a strong position to sign Valladolid’s star for a reasonable fee.
