Jamie Carragher thinks Tottenham will have to give Antonio Conte time to succeed and revert the club’s current crisis. Carragher has named Mauricio Pochettino’s stint in north London as the level Conte will be aiming to take Tottenham back to but isn’t confident it’ll be a quick fix, suggesting it may even take as long as three years.

Conte has reportedly agreed an 18-month contract to become Spurs’ new head coach and replace Nuno Espirito Santo.

Daniel Levy sacked Nuno after Saturday’s dismal 3-0 home defeat to Manchester United and has quickly found a marquee successor.

The Italian boss has a monumental task ahead of him, with a return to Champions League football likely his primary aim.

But there are doubts over whether Levy will afford his new head coach enough time to lead a return to the ‘glory days’ under Pochettino.

On Monday night, Carragher explained Conte would likely need much longer than his 18-month contract to get Spurs to where they want to be.

He told Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football: “I think a manager is going to need more than 18 months to turn Tottenham around.

“And even though I am a huge admirer of Antonio Conte and the success he had with Chelsea and every club he has been to, I think it would be very difficult to replicate that success in 18 months.

“I think he could need another 18 months on top of that to maybe get Tottenham back, maybe challenging.”

Carragher elaborated on his comments by suggesting Conte could need three years to get Tottenham back to their level under Pochettino.

He added: “When I say ‘get Tottenham back’, maybe back to where they were under [Mauricio] Pochettino.

“Where they felt they had a chance of winning trophies and pushing people for the title, Champions League year in, year out.

“I think there is a lot of work to be done so, do I think Conte can turn that around in 18 months? I think it will be difficult for a man of his calibre.”

The ex-Liverpool defender believes the current Spurs squad is capable of challenging for a top-four spot and has backed Conte to turn them into Champions League stalwarts.

“I think this squad is capable of challenging for the CL positions and they are not a million miles away from that right now,” Carragher continued.

“Tottenham as a club should always aspire to be in that position. I think Antonio Conte, if he took that job, I think Tottenham maybe not this season but certainly in the future you will be looking at them and thinking ‘oh yeah they can certainly make the Champions League’ because he can make a huge difference as he has shown throughout his career.”
