Ajax have agreed a £12million fee with Middlesbrough for striker Chuba Akpom who was also wanted by Sheffield United and Lens.

The 27-year-old is due to travel to Holland for a medical on Monday.

A former Arsenal youth player, Akpom joined Greek side PAOK in 2018, before moving back to the UK to join Middlesbrough in 2020.

He signed for Boro on a £2.75m deal, going on to score 34 goals in 82 appearances across all competitions for the club.

Twenty-eight of those goals came during last season’s championship, with the England youth-grade striker enjoying a prolific season.

Yet it appears he could be on his way out of the club, having not featured for Michael Carrick’s side during their pre-season.

He was notably on the bench for Boro’s Championship opener against Millwall, which saw them lose 1-0 at the Riverside, but failed to come on in that match.

Lens had offered £8m for the forward in a bid to beat Sheffield United to his signature.

It comes as Middlesbrough are closing on a £4m deal for Ivory Coast striker Emmanuel Latte Lath from Atalanta.

The 24-year-old, who graduated from the Serie A club’s youth academy, spent last season out on loan at FC St Gallen.

He went on to score 16 goals in 34 appearances across all competitions for the Swiss side.

The striker scored during Atalanta’s 3-1 pre-season win against Premier League side Bournemouth.
