7 former Man Utd players who fans cannot believe are still playing in 2022

A number of forgotten former Manchester United stars are surprisingly still playing professional football in 2022 despite leaving Old Trafford years ago.

Having reached the highest level by representing one of the biggest clubs in the world, some players drift out of the limelight after their time with the Red Devils comes to an end. As a result, United fans are often left in shock after discovering that some of their former players are still active professionals years after they last wore the club's colours.

Here, Daily Star Sport looks at seven former United players who fans cannot believe are still playing.

Plucked from relative obscurity by Sir Alex Ferguson back in 2010, Bebe became something of a cult hero during his four years with United.

Eight years on from his departure, he is now into his fifth season with Spanish side Rayo Vallecano, making one substitute appearance for the club so far this campaign.

Now 32, he is also now a Cape Verde international after switching allegiance from Portugal, the nation of his birth. He has scored three goals in six caps since making his debut in March of this year.

Lee Martin

Veteran playmaker Lee Martin made three first team appearances for United between 2004 and 2009 after being signed for over £1million as a 16-year-old.

Since leaving the club, he has embarked on a nomadic career path in both the Football League and non-league, joining his 16th club earlier this summer when he moved to Dover Athletic on a free after his contract ended at Ebbsfleet United.

In seven National League South appearances for the Whites this term, Martin has scored once and started all of their league matches so far.

Anders Lindegaard

Signed from Norwegian club Aalesund in 2011, Anders Lindegaard spent the majority of his time at Old Trafford serving as back-up to David de Gea.

Overall, the former Denmark international made 29 appearances in goal for United and was a member of two league title winning squads before departing in 2015.

Now aged 38, he has spent the last three years in Sweden with Helsingborgs, winning promotion back to the top flight last year, although the club are currently second bottom and seven points from safety.

Gabriel Obertan

French winger Gabriel Obertan spent two years with United after signing from Bordeaux in 2009, picking up a Premier League winners medal but making just 27 appearances.

After being sold to Newcastle United in 2011, Obertan has since had spells in Russia, Bulgaria and Turkey, as well as a six-month stint at Wigan Athletic in 2017.

He is currently enjoying a second spell with third tier American side Charlotte Independence, having returned to the club in June, six months after being released by the same outfit.

Federico Macheda

After bursting onto the scene with his debut match winner against Aston Villa in April 2009, Federico Macheda scored just four more times for United before leaving in 2014.

The former Italian youth international went on to have spells with Cardiff City, Nottingham Forest and Novara before settling at Panathinaikos in 2018.

After four years in Greece, Macheda joined Turkish side Ankaragucu in July and has since made four appearances for the club but is yet to score for them.

Zoran Tosic

Serbian midfielder Zoran Tosic was highly regarded when United splashed out more than £6million to sign him from Partizan Belgrade in 2009.

However, he made just five appearances for the Red Devils before being sold to CSKA Moscow 18 months later after a loan spell with Koln.

Over a decade on, and after stints in China and his native Serbia, Tosic has spent the last year in Kazakhstan with Tobol Kostanay, scoring 11 goals and providing 11 assists in 41 appearances.

A fan favourite alongside twin brother Fabio during his seven years as a United player, Rafael won three league titles with the club along with six other major trophies.

After spending time with both Lyon and Istanbul Basaksehir, Rafael returned to Brazil last year to sign for Botafogo and remains with the club to this day.

However, Rafael has been sidelined for almost the whole of 2022 after rupturing his achilles tendon back in January. At 32, Fabio is also still playing and is into his fifth season in France with Europa League contenders Nantes.
