Fernando Alonso’s new girlfriend is journalist who caught his eye covering F1

Fernando Alonso's return to Formula One caused quite a storm with the two-time champion back on the grid and it appears it has also impacted his personal life as well, with the driver confirming he and Andrea Schlager are now a couple.

The 40-year-old Spaniard and the 39-year-old Austrian journalist were flirting on social media platform Instagram, regularly liking each other's photos to spark rumours of a blossoming romance.

Now, those theories appear to be correct as the pair have been spending more time together and tagging each other in photos, with Spanish media saying they're an item and that he flew in a private jet to Austria to spend time with the brunette – while the pair both shared pictures together after Miami's F1 debut that seemed to confirm the news.

Sharing a video of Schlager riding a horse, Alonso accompanied the clip with the caption: 'Happy horse, powerful beauty', while Schlager was pictured in a helmet similar to Alonso's and tagged him in the post with the caption 'safety first'.

Earlier this week, in perhaps the clearest indication of the pair's relationship yet, the Austrian journalist posted another photo with Alonso and stated she was 'looking forward to another summer' – where Formula One has a break in the season.

Schlager has long-term experience in Formula One and now stands as Austria's most famous F1 presenter, having started her career working in the office of former F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone.

Her break in F1 came last season, which coincided with Alonso's return to the grid, having previously worked on tennis and ice hockey, and she appears to have caught the eye of the former world championship winner with her presence.

Alonso was previously married to Spanish singer Raquel del Rosario but the pair separated in 2011, with the driver then dating Italian model Linda Morselli for five years before their break-up was reported in February this year.

On the track this season, Alonso has encountered inconsistency with Alpine after a strong start saw him finish ninth in the season opener in Bahrain but he has had two DNF's since, with his two finishes coming outside the points – most recently in Miami, where he finished 11th.

That leaves him with just two points to his name this season, significantly less than the 24 teammate Esteban Ocon has secured.
