UFC fighters Hill and Teixeira both taken to hospital after brutal bout

UFC stars Jamahal Hill and Glover Teixeira were taken straight to hospital after their brutal main event in Brazil.

American Hill spoiled the party at UFC 283 as he defeated home favourite Teixeira by unanimous decision in a bloody battle for the light-heavyweight title.

Hill, 31, dominated to claim the title that had been left vacated by Jiri Prochazka after the Czech star's shoulder injury that will leave him sidelined for most of the year.

The bloodied and bruised fighters left it all in the cage at the Jeunesse Arena in Rio de Janiero as Hill threatened an early finish.

And both men were later transported to a local hospital in Rio for safety precautions, forcing the duo to miss the post-fight press conference.

Veteran fighter Teixeria took the most damaging shots in the five-round showdown and left the cage with several nasty face lacerations that will require stitches.

And after going to war for the final time, 43-year-old Teixeira announced his retirement from MMA following a decade in Dana White's UFC promotion.

“I can’t keep up anymore," Teixeira said, sporting a nasty cut above his eye with blood gushing down his face.

"I’m going to focus on Alex Pereira, he is going to keep his belt for a while and then go up to light-heavyweight.

"It’s an honour to put the gloves down on the same night as Shogun," he added, referencing former lightweight champion Mauricio Shogun Rua who retired at the same event. "In reality, I think I’m too tough for my own good, too tough for my own health."

And Hill, who embraced with Teixeira after their savage clash, was overcome with emotion after becoming the first UFC champion to emerge from the Contender Series.

"From where I came from to get to this, it's unreal," Hill said. "Anything is possible, hard work, dedication, accountability, don't let anybody tell you nothing.

"Too many people told me I couldn't do it was impossible, that I could only win in one round and I couldn't to go five, what the f*** you gonna say now?"
