Former UFC star left disfigured after gruesome cut in brutal Grappling fight

Former UFC star Carla Esparza has been left disfigured after being left with a gruesome cut in a Grappling fight in Pennsylvania last Thursday.

The former strawweight world champion was the UFC's first champion in that weight class when she defeated Rose Namajunas in 2014.

It had been rumoured that a proposed meeting with Namajunas was in the works for 2022, but that fight may now be in doubt after Esparza suffered a gruesome cut on Thursday.

She sustained the injury via an accidental headbutt when she slammed opponent Danielle Kelly onto the floor at Fury Pro Grappling 3 last week.

Esparza had been filling in at the event for Namajunas, who has been forced to withdraw from the card.

The clash of heads left her with a deep cut under her right eyebrow, with the referee immediately pausing the fight before later calling it off.

She later posted an update for her fans on social media as she showed off the gruesome injury in an Instagram post.

Esparza wrote: "Sorry guys, accidental headbutt on a slam led to a cut and a stop in the match, in good spirits. Just gotta get a couple stitches."

Meanwhile, Kelly also took to social media to reflect on the incident and wish Esparza a speedy recovery as she wrote: "I just want to say I wish [Esparza] a speedy recovery.

"Not me or her were expecting that and maybe [there will be] a rematch in the future if it doesn’t get between schedules.

"Honestly, I was confused and a lot of adrenaline was going through me. I was just really excited to be a part of a huge event with everyone watching. I'm also just nerding out this mark on my face."

Kelly was also left with bruising on her face following the clash of heads, but was not left with a deep cut like her opponent.
