Alexander Volkanovski fell short in his attempt at becoming a two-weight UFC champion after losing to Islam Makhachev at UFC 284.
Makhachev won an unanimous decision by scores of 28-27, 28-27 and 29-26 to successfully defend his lightweight belt at RAC Arena in Perth, Australia.
However, fans have taken to social media to say Volkanovski shouldn’t lose his pound for pound no 1 status despite the loss to Makhachev – who is now on a 12-fight winning streak.
One fan wrote: ‘Honestly I don’t know if Alexander Volkanovski should lose his No. 1 ranking after that performance I know it’s hard to say that after Islam beat him but idk Thoughts?’
To which another fan replied: ‘Nope, Volkanovski pushed Islam like no one has and maybe never will. Plus how that 5th Round ended really hard to take the # 1 P4P ranking away from Vokanovski’.

Another added: ‘Considering it was fairly even the entire fight, Volk showed he’s capable of wrestling with Islam as the smaller man & the fight ended with Volk dropping and landing GnP on Islam I don’t think he should lose the #1 spot’.
While one fan wrote: ‘Alexander Volkanovski proved he’s an incredible grappler. Islam Makhachev proved he’s an incredible striker. They both proved they deserve their pound for pound statuses. That was one of the most competitive title fights in UFC history.’
Another said: ‘It doesn’t even matter who wins. Alexander Volkanovski is a superstar after this fight. An all-time great. #UFC284’.
While one fan added: ‘I think with how hard Volk pushed Islam to the brink that 5th rd should’ve helped him keep his crown as PFP king imo. We’ve never seen someone of Islam’s caliber pushed so close to defeat as he was in that last round and overall tbh. Volk silenced a lot of doubters even by losing.’
To which one UFC fan replied: ‘I’m on that train as well. No one should be p4p #1 in MMA with one defense. Volk took Islam to the limit. Only thing Islam proved tonight was that there’s a reason there are weight classes. Volk dared to be great and arguably succeeded. Volk still gets my vote.’
Another added: ‘I feel like Volk is still number 1. He showed great wrestling and made Islam earn that win. If Islam had finished Volk I could see an argument for him taking the number 1 spot then.’
