Canelo undisputed champ with late KO of Plant

LAS VEGAS — Canelo Alvarez knocked out Caleb Plant in the 11th round to become the undisputed super middleweight champion Saturday night at MGM Grand Garden Arena.

Alvarez, boxing’s top star and pound-for-pound No. 1 fighter, captured Plant’s IBF belt to add to his own WBC, WBO and WBA belts. He now holds all four belts in one weight class for the first time in his career.

Plant was taken to a local hospital for observation, according to a PBC spokesperson.

Alvarez kept swarming, round after round, even as his tricky, elusive opponent glided around the ring. The pressure mounted, and Alvarez never stopped coming. He promised to punish Plant, the opponent he said was the most disliked of his career, and in the 11th round, he finally broke through.

A brutal left hook followed by an even more vicious right uppercut floored Plant. He never recovered.

On unsteady legs, Plant attempted to escape danger, but Alvarez sensed the moment. He closed in with a barrage of shots that dropped Plant again as referee Russell Mora halted the bout at 45 seconds of the 11th.
