Netflix curse with every tennis star in Break Point out of Australian Open

The 'Netflix curse' has struck again in Melbourne, with all of the 10 tennis stars featured in the opening five episodes of Break Point out of the Australian Open before the quarter-final stage.

The behind-the-scenes documentary series focused on the next generation of tennis stars coming through as the likes of Serena Williams, Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer come to the end of their careers.

Controversial Australian star Nick Kyrgios was the star of the opening episode titled "The Maverick" but withdrew from the tournament through injury, while fellow series participants Ajla Tomljanovic and Paula Badosa were absent for the same reason.

Tomljanovic reacted to rumours of the curse commenting on Twitter: "Can we stop with the Netflix curse lol. It’s just sports,"

Once the tournament began 13th seed Matteo Berrettini was the fourth casualty after suffering straight sets defeat against Andy Murray. The British star then knocked out another documentary participant, beating Thanasi Kokkinakis in a five-set epic match in the second round.

The curse then took its highest seeded male participant with world No.3 Casper Ruud beaten in the second round by rising star Jenson Brooksby.

American Taylor Fritz came into the tournament as the eighth seed and was asked about the 'Netflix curse' after his first round win.

"I didn't know that was a [thing],' Fritz said. "Obviously I noticed the people pulling out of the tournament, but I didn't know it was a thing, like, I'm going to lose my first round because I'm in the Netflix show? I didn't think of that."

However Fritz was next to be struck, exiting the tournament in the second round after a five-set match against Australian Alexei Popyrin.

The curse has also struck the women's draw with World No.2 Ons Jabeur crashing out after a shock defeat by the unseeded Marketa Vondrousova. Heading into Friday's matches, just Greek star Maria Sakkari and Felix Auger-Aliassime remained from the 10 featured players in the Break Point episodes.

Former world No.3 Sakkari was next to be hit by the curse losing her third round match 6-7, 6-1, 4-6 against unseeded Chinese player Zhu Lin.

Finally Canadian sixth seed Auger-Aliassime was the final player left before crashing out in the fourth round against world No.71 Jiri Lehecka. Netflix has replied to the curse accusations on Twitter stating: "To clarify: this is purely a coincidence…"
